The Tangent Function

Sine and cosine gave the coordinates of a point on the unit circle. Tangent answers a different question: how steep is the terminal ray? That one idea explains everything about the tangent graph — why it repeats every $\pi$ instead of every $2\pi$, and why it shoots off to infinity.
